How To Guide to a Political Cartoon
by Mike Spooner
· Introduction
A political cartoon is a form of news and information that generally shows a political view of a person or group of people involving a political topic. Sometimes a Political Cartoon is the best way for an author to create a call to action or an opinion of the political topic being targeted. A well designed political cartoon can be very effective in a political world.
· Step by Step Creation
1. Find a person or political issue that you want to target or feel strongly about and then pursue research on that person.
2. Decide if you want to do a part by part sketch or does a main scene sketch. For an example of a part by part sketch which includes multiple boxes see http://www.vanettenstudios.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/political-cartoon-sample.jpg and for an example of a main scene sketch including one box see http://www.enewsreference.com/images/obamacartoon.jpg.
3. Create a proper background that interacts with your target to show how you feel about your issue.
4. Determine how much actual text you want in your political cartoon or if you want the cartoons actions to show your message.
5. Finalize your cartoon by properly placing the textual message that you plan on giving.
· Outline
1. Determine amount of boxes
2. Decide how to piece your cartoon
3. Draw your cartoon in place
4. Apply text clearly and easily to see
5. Apply color if desired.
6. Sign name in lower right hand corner of the last box or only box that you have.
2. To help your readers identify your political icons consider finding a physical trait that stands them out from others. For example Barak Obama is tall and has larger ears. An example would be this cartoon. http://www.enewsreference.com/images/blog/obama070708.jpg
3. Don’t be afraid to be negative in your cartoon depending on who you’re writing too. You could be really helping your cause depending on where you are and who your writing about, however this same theory could also back fire if not done correctly. For example don’t write negative about George Bush in the State of Texas where he was raised.
4. Hidden things can be extremely effective in a political cartoon. The hidden things refer to alternate messages that the artist is sending. This could cause the reader to think more about your cartoon causing it to be better and more talked about.
