Whether you are advertising for a family owned hardware store, McDonalds franchise location, or a fortune 500 company, advertisement plays an equally important role. Effective advertising will promote a company’s message and in turn increase sales. There are many different forms of advertising that companies use. The genres of advertising that you pick needs to accommodate to the audience you are trying to reach. Many companies who want to advertise to a large diverse audience will use billboards to do so. If you want to have an effective billboard there are many things you must consider.
Deciding What Style of Billboard to Use
1. The first thing you need to do is recognize the audience you are trying to reach. In most cases, with billboards, this will be adults who are commuting. Most billboards are located on the side of interstates, so they must be able to communicate their message quickly.
2. Then you need to ask if your billboard will be there to inform the audience about a particular product or service, or if you are trying to inspire them to seek a product or service. These two advertising styles, informative and inspirational, utilize completely different advertising strategies.

The billboard shown above is an excellent example of an inspirational billboard. The billboard shows superstar basketball player Kobe Bryant dunking the basketball. The text “Just Do It” is a simple phrase that has now become recognizable to Nike .The billboard appeals to the audiences pathos because upon viewing the billboard you feel excited. Another reason this billboard is so effective is because it inspires the audience in more ways than one. It advertises Nike, The U.S.A men’s basketball team, and the Beijing Olympics.
The effectiveness of your billboard relies on its ability to capture the attention of the audience. From there, you must choose to inform them or inspire them. If you can successfully do either one of these things, you can greatly increase the amount of business and revenues you will receive.
